FIFTH GENERATION

408. Jonathan Thorn was born about 1724/25 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. He died about 12 Nov 1777 in Hartford, CT. Died at age 53. Jonathan Thorne was a Loyalist. He was arrested & sent to the Continental Army prison camp in Hartford, CN, where he died. He was buried on 14 Nov 1777 in Center Church, Hartford, Conn. Philip V. Thorne Notes:

The Family that originally owned most of the land between the Hudson River & the present-day of Conn., was named Van Courtlandt. Jonathan's Father & probably all of his sons, were known as SQUIRES OF COURTLANDT MANOR. That was an indication that they were property owners of some note, having purchased lands from the Van Courtlandt's. Jonathan Thorne's Wife Catherine Livingston, was a niece of Pierre Van Courtlandt & an Heiress to that vast estate. Jonathan's Father Samuel, was a humble Quaker farmer-blacksmith. One evening while staying with her Uncle, Pierre Van Courtlandt, Catherine stole out of the Family Mansion (I've seen it!!) & went to the home of SAMUEL THORNE. She returned in less than an hour as MRS. JONATHAN THORNE, having been married by her Father-in-law, who was also a Magistrate. This did not please the Van Courtlandts, who NEVER recognized or accepted him. In the Van Courtlandt Family Bible, Jonathan Thorne, is referred to simply as blank Thorne. She did recessive her inheritances. Note the names of their children, the Van Courtlandt Dutch Heritage, did not go unrecognized.

This Jonathan Thorne was a Loyalist He was captured & sent to the Continental Army Prison Camp in Hartford, Connecticut, where He died at age 53. In April of 1994 I visited the old church cemetery, where he is buried.

He was married to Catherine Livingston (daughter of Gilbert Livingston and Cornelia Beekman) on 12 Jun 1751 in Croton, Westchester Co, NY. Catherine Livingston was born on 17 Jul 1734 in Kingston, Ulster Co, NY. She died on 3 Nov 1769 in New York. Niece of Pierre Van Cortland.
