SEVENTH GENERATION

1212. Jonathan Thorn was born on 22 Nov 1786 in Westchester County, NY. Jonathan's Father is known to have arrived in Orange County, New York in 1791. The Jones Genealogy states that Jonathan was born in Westchester County. As Jonathan was born prior to 1791, this would be a confirmation, as John Thorne & Mary Birdsall were, both born & raised in Westchester County. He died on 18 Jun 1867 in Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. Jonathan Thorne was 80 years old at death. He was buried about 20 Jun 1867 in Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. He is buried with 2nd wife Charity Rider, Cornwall NY, Quaker cemetery. They are only Thorne's with headstones. I have visited his grave. In Oct of 1992, My Wife, Marlene & I located it & we have fotos of their headstones plus the meeting house.

At first thought I assumed that I was perhaps the first of Jonathan Thorne's offspring to visit his grave. Not so. Two of his daughters remained in the area & Harold Campbell had identified & located our Jonathan, many years before me. As Jonathan had but one surviving son, who had moved far west, I must be the first & as far as I know the only of his offspring to still carry his name, to visit his grave. Over the years many more are sure to follow. While Jonathan Thorne had only one surviving son to carry on his name, you would think his Thorne descendants might be few in number. His son Jonathan & his 6 sons, supplied the family with dozens of sons to carry on the name of THORNE. He had an estate probated on 9 Oct 1867 in Goshen, Orange Co, NY. He was Quaker. Philip V. Thorne Notes:

Married twice. M1 Cornelia Jones of Thomas Jones & Mary Jones. M2 Charity C. Rider of King Rider. Charity's younger sister Lydia R. married Daniel Williams. Daniel's dtr Margeretta (M2) married Jonathan J Thorne, only surviving son, of Jonathan & Cornelia.

According to the Jones genealogy, Jonathan Thorne was born in Westchester County, New York & that he settled in Orange County, New York, on the west side of Orange Lake. I have seen info to confirm that this is the area where wife Cornelia had land from her father & that she died in this area. She is also said to have died in Warwarsing.

Jonathan applied for membership to the Religious Society of Friends in 1812, along with his wife Cornelia & 2 infant daughters. He made this application at the Valley P.M. & was recorded a member in 1813 at the Marlboro Monthly Meeting House in Plattekill, Ulster County., NY. He eventually was made an overseer in the church & an elder. His wife Cornelia died in 1830 & is buried (I believe) in the Friend's burial ground at Plattekill, NY; however no headstone has been found. Prior to 1840 the Quakers were not permitted to have grave markers as they believed in "plainness in life and in death". In 1834 he married again to Charity C. Rider. In the minutes of the Marlboro MM, He is quoted as identifying his parent's as John & Mary Thorne of Newburgh, NY. A thorough research of the Quaker records has been completed by Shirley Anson ( quaker researcher ), Tom Hamm (historian at Earlham College, Indiana) & Suzanne McVetty of Long Island (Certified Genealogist). As a result of their work we know for a fact that his mother was Mary Birdsall, a daughter of Zadoc Birdsall. <This was the breakthrough we needed to trace our family to the well Known William Thorne of Flushing, LI>. His Will dated 13 Sept 1864 gives the names of His daughter's (Phoebe & Anna) spouses. Plus it mentions his 2 grandchildren as Peter & Hannah Brown. They are the children of his daughter Roseanna ( Of Charity). No further mention has been found of her, other than quaker birth record. This has been confirmed by the wills of Jonathan & Charity, in which a guardianship arrangement was approved, apparently both Roseanna & the father, Josiah Quimby Brown were already deceased. The records of the Cornwall MM are as of yet, not published, however, according to Harold Campbell (fellow descendant), they are both buried at Cornwall Quaker Cemetery.

Brother Thomas P.'s Dtr Jane married Amos B. BROWN. Based on the way these families married brothers & sisters, this is quite likely the Brown family married to Roseanna. LATER NOTE; The 2 BROWN'S above are brothers!

The name Jonathan had not appeared in our Thorne line prior to this Jonathan. Mother Mary had a younger brother named Jonathan Birdsall, He is probably the person for whom Jonathan Thorne was named.

He was married to Cornelia Jones (daughter of Thomas Jones and Mary Jones) on 14 Nov 1807 in Orange Co, NY. They were married by Rev Ebenezeer Prime of the 1st church of Huntington, LI. After Marriage they removed to Orange Co., about 6 miles from Newburg to his father's farm. Cornelia Jones was born on 7 Feb 1785 in Long Island, NY. She was buried in Feb 1830 in Plattekill Friends Cemetery, Plattekill, Ulster County, NY. There exists no record as to the location of Cornelia Jones Thorne's burial site, but I am convinced that she is buried in the John Thorne Family Burial Plot in the Plattekill Friends Cemetery in Ulster County, New York. She died on 6 Feb 1830 in Warwarsing, Ulster, NY. She was Quaker. Her son Jonathan J Thorne's Oregon state death certificate confirms her maiden name.

She is the mother of all of Jonathan's children except for last child Roseanna, whose Mom was Charity Rider.

According to the MAJOR THOMAS JONES Genealogy, Cornelia died in Warwarsing, NY. In light of the fact that her ELDEST daughter married a man from Warwarsing, we have at least something else that ties Cornelia to that place at about that time. Jonathan Thorn and Cornelia Jones had the following children:

child+1963 i. Mary Jane Thorn.
child+1964 ii. Phebe Jane Thorn.
child+1965 iii. Anna Eliza Thorn.
child1966 iv. Thomas Jones Thorn was born on 3 Jun 1818 in Ulster County, NY. He was buried in Sep 1818. He died on 17 Sep 1818 in Ulster County, NY. This child of Jonathan & Cornelia's was no doubt, named for either her Father or her Uncle the Judge, who left for England & never returned or had kids of his own.
child1967 v. Arabela Thorne was born on 7 Jul 1820 in Ulster County, NY. She died on 23 Sep 1820 in Ulster County, NY.
child+1968 vi. Jonathan Jones Thorn.
child1969 vii. Henry Thorn was born on 8 Mar 1824 in Ulster County, NY. He died on 7 Jun 1824 in Ulster County, NY. Died as infant. Aged 2 mos 29 days. The info regarding this child is from Harold Campbell (of Anna Eliza), he found it in the Thorn files at the NYG&B. It was a typewritten transcript from "GrandFather Thorne's Bible". He thinks it was Jonathan Thorne's Family Bible.

He was married to Charity C. Rider (daughter of King Rider and Rosanna Hunter) on 5 Jan 1834 in Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. Charity C. Rider was born on 19 Jul 1797 in Chappaqua, Westchester Co, NY. NYG&B record have a typed transcript showing slightly different dates but VERY close. They say she was born at 4:00 PM She was buried in Sep 1872 in Cornwall Quaker Cemetery, Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. Friends Cemetery at Cornwall Meeting House, Cornwall, NY. She died on 22 Sep 1872 in Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. She had an estate probated on 23 Jan 1873 in Goshen, Orange Co, NY. Charity's younger Sister Lydia was Married to Daniel Williams. Daniel & Jonathan Thorne were Brothers-in-law. Her middle name was Cornell. Jonathan Thorn and Charity C. Rider had the following children:

child+1970 i. Roseanna Rider Thorn.
