2034. Samuel Gilbert Thorn was born on 4 Sep 1823 in Portsmouth, NH. He was baptized on 30 Nov 1823. He died on 2 Aug 1887 in New Haven, CT. Samuel Gilbert Thorn was an accountant in Baltimore. Later was appointed assistant paymaster in the US Navy on 24 Feb 1862 and served on the steam gunboat "Sebago".
He left the Navy on 12 Nov 1863 and began a small but successfull investment house known as "Thompson & Thorn".

He was married to Harriet Elizabeth Lord (daughter of John Perkins Lord and Sophia Ladd) on 25 Oct 1853 in Portsmouth, NH. Harriet Elizabeth Lord was born on 12 Jan 1821 in South Berwick, ME. She died on 14 Sep 1907 in Middlebury, VT. Samuel Gilbert Thorn and Harriet Elizabeth Lord had the following children:

2981 i. Sophia Lord Thorn was born on 23 Jan 1855 in Baltimore, MD. She graduated in 1892 in BS from Wellesley College. She died on 25 Apr 1905 in Calhoun, AL. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, CN. Sophia Lord Thorn b. Jan. 23, 1855, in Baltimore; d. April 25, 1905, in Calhoun, AL.; unmarried. She received a degree of B. S. from Wellesley College in 1892, and taught at Ogonts, the National Cathedral School and other girls' schools, and at Calhoun Colored School. She had a keen mind for mathematics. Sophia Lord Thorn is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, -New Haven.

2982 ii. Charlotte Rogers Thorn was born on 21 Nov 1857 in New Haven, CT. She died on 29 Aug 1932 in Montgomery, AL. She was buried in Calhoun Colored School Grounds, AL. Calhoun Colored School Co-Founder. She died unmarried & is buried on the grounds of the Calhoun Colored School.

She was the second of three children of Samuel Gilbert Thorne & his wife Harriet Elizabeth Lord

FROM LONG ISLAND GENEALOGIES VOLUME II P 324 WE HAVE THIS EXCERPT:

"Charlotte Rogers Thorne 21 Nov 1857 in New Haven, CT & died 29 Aug 1932 in Montgomery, AL; unmarried. She was on the staff Hampton Institute, VA from 1888 to 1892, where she served at times as housekeeper for the Principal General Armstrong. Her Houseboy, Robert Russa Moton, followed Booker T. Washington as Principal of Tuskeegee Institute. With Miss Mable Dillingham of Boston she founded in 1892 the Calhoun Colored School in Calhoun, Lowndes County, AL, in the heart of the Black Belt, And she continued as Co-Principal or Principal until her death forty years later. Miss Dillingham died in 1894; her brother William Pitt Dillingham; and later Miss Emily Hallowell of West Medford, also served as Co-Principals."

"The originial Board of Trustees of CCS included Thomas Wentworth Higginson of Boston, John Bigelow of New York and Booker T. Washington of Tuskeegee. In later years Miss Lucy Tutwiler of Alabama, Dr. James Hardy Dillard of Virginia and Dr. Will Alexander of Georgia were frequent visitors and warms supporters. Substantial financial assistance came from Individual benefactors in Boston, Providence, New York and Philadelphia, and from the General Education Board, Phelps-Stokes Fund and other philanthropic foundations. The school became well known for scholastic excellence, and for promoting with remarkable success friendly relations between the races, locally and throughout the South, while maintaining on the campus New England traditions of social equality."

"Charlotte Rogers Thorne was a woman of exceptional beauty and charm, as well as decision of character and executive ability. She is buried on the school grounds at Calhoun."
